Scraper (sakuut)

This scraper, called a sakuut, has a wooden handle and a blade made from the femur of a caribou's hind leg.

By some accounts, women used this type of scraper to prepare the skins of sea mammals, like ringed seals and harp seals.  After using a scraper with a dull blade to stretch and soften the skin, they would use a scraper like this one to stretch the skin further and remove the subcutaneous fat (mamiq).

According to other accounts, this scraper was instead used to remove the fur from a caribou skin. It is thought that Inuit adopted it from the Cree nation (Eeyou).

Nowadays, scrapers with an aluminum or metal blade are more often used to prepare seal or caribou skins.
